About

Zach Chaney is a Graduate Research Assistant for the Nuclear Engineering program at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, working on thrust 5: defects and ion irradiation. His work is on the characterization of oxidation of Carbides and Nitrides under extreme conditions, with a particular focus on Zirconium Carbide. He uses X-Ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy to study the onset and kinetics of Zirconium Carbide after dense electron excitation by heavy ion irradiation, as well as the effects of varying microstructure on those processes.
